Description
The selection consists of Anne D. Greene's letters to her parents from November 1902 to May 1903. These letters contain Greene's accounts of life at Bryn Mawr College as well as the process of transferring to Barnard College. Greene also comments on the Class of 1905's plays as well as her enjoyment of exercise and basketball. One account of particular note is when Greene describes the time when students protested proctors being assigned to every three people in the upcoming exams | as Greene writes "if we are worthy of self governence, we are worthy of an honor system during exams." The undergraduates drew up a petition and asked for a meeting with M. Carey Thomas to plead their case. Greene asks that the incident not be spread outside the family "because Civil wars are bad for the reputation of the college." The students were "so angry at M. Carey's double dealing that [they] can't say a nice thing of her." Thomas had apparently told the students that the faculty insisted on the proctors because of the threat of cheating while telling the faculty that the students wanted proctors. There are also accounts of her work at the Settlement House, dissections in Biology, and essay assignments. One letter lists popular songs which were being sung on campus. There is also a letter from classmate Avis Putnam (AB 1905) to Anne Greene after she had transferred to Barnard, dated 1903 October 9, which comments on Bryn Mawr College courses and faculty, including nicknames by which they were known to the student body. Finally, there is a letter to Anne Greene, author identified only as Louise, dated 1903 October 10, which describes life at Bryn Mawr College, including plans for Freshman Play.
