Description
Cornelia James Cannon was a member of the Radcliffe College Class of 1899. These two albums contain mostly typescript excerpts of letters written by Cornelia, her mother Frances James, sisters Margaret and Helen, and other relatives. The letters were written while the family lived in Newport, Minnesota. The first volume contains table of contents which includes: "moving to Harvard Place in Newport”, "Cornelia goes East to Auntie", and "Cornelia goes to Radcliffe." The letters paint a vivid picture of James family life, including the births of Cornelia’s younger siblings, the deaths of favorite Aunt Lucy and their grandmother, and Margaret’s wedding to Aaron Burt. They also mention Margaret studying sculpting with “St. Gaudens” in New York, Cornelia attending high school in West Newton, Massachusetts, and Cornelia and Helen attending Radcliffe College. The first volume contains a 1969 letter from Cornelia to her sisters regarding dying before them, and the second includes a humorous and autobiographical play by Cornelia and Helen entitled "The Mirror."
